C'mon guys, Gooch is a dedicated Wanderers Sports Club member of longstanding who has stepped up to the plate and fulfilled many roles for his club over the decades, he's a nice guy and happens to have a business background.

Good on him for having a crack.

Football watches may have noted that in the previous incarnation of the Waikato/Waibob/Wanderers Sports Club franchise the manager role was fulfilled by somebody who was already employed full-time in the game doing other stuff (ie the Waibop CEO).

So the positive news is the Waikato national league entity now has a manager whose sole focus is the national league. That's got to be good, right? Maybe this focus will assist growing support for national league.

Has there been much interest in the Waikato regarding the upcoming season?  Judging from how few comments there are here even us staunch Waikato football tragics are not that bothered.

Also are the Wanderers also expected to represent the BoP, as I can't see people in Rotovagas or Tauranga / Mount being too keen on them.

I'm interested to see how they go. I really enjoyed getting along to the games last year so I'll aim to see the first half of home matches this season and then judge them. But there isn't much hype around about them that's for sure! I Spose people are still focused on either the shield, or harassing strippers round here anyway!

Lol.  That got more attention here in the UK then the result did!

Hello there.

I'm interested, and wish Wanderers all the best (despite being aligned with a rival northern league club). That's because they have had the courage to take up a challenge few have the bottle for.

Wanderers have been active. They have installed a few seats and a concrete path adjacent to what has become the new No 1 pitch (as opposed to the old centre pitch at Porritt). New dugouts and scoreboard as well.

Wanderers have this week circulated a memo to clubs regarding youth team trials in Hamilton, Rotorua and Tauranga. They have (apparently) also relieved Mark Cossey of coaching duties for the remainder of winter to allow him to concentrate on summer (though that may also have been a result of player pressure in a tough season for all I know). Shane Comber appears to have stepped in for the remainder of winter, and he is a rising coaching talent, worthy of respect.

They have drawn up plans for further development at Porritt based on building off the old stand facing the center pitch.

So good on them. One of the great things about national league is the manner in which it has - at different times - been the catalyst for much-needed facility development around the Waikato: at Centennial Park (Ngaruawahia), John Kerkhof Park (Cambridge) and now Porritt.

Hope this helps.

Hi Bruce, I know Porritt well but can't vision in my head the developments you described.  have they been carried out on the pitch near the prefab clubrooms building?

Hi Marto, Yes, it is the pitch that was upgraded as a training venue for 2015 U-20 Tourney, which they now use as their No 1 pitch (adjacent to clubrooms). Has a wire fence around it, a path and a few seats. Some of the Wanderers folk could probably tell you more.

Cheers Reg and Bruce.

If that google map photo of Porritt is post U-20s, surely the facilities in the main stadium are still better for fans then the new No1 pitch.

A fair amount of Birkenhead players involved in the HW squad. It will be interesting to see how they get on as a club this season.

I recognise very few of those names.  I'm guessing Wanderers will just be making up the numbers or are there a fair few decent players in those unknown from Wanderers and Birkenhead?

IMO the outer pitch (what's now the number 1) is vastly superior for the fan experience. The main stadium has the running track so you're miles away from the action. With a few more developments (which I'm told are in the pipeline) the outer ground will be great.

Second what has been said here, whilst it'll be a great experience to play at Waikato Stadium, I am more looking forward to the games on our No.1 pitch. Our winter season games have given us examples of what the atmosphere will be like and it is a lot better than that of the middle pitch. Closer to the action + the playing surface is pristine.

Which ones do you recognise?

The ones in bold below:

Goalkeepers: Damian Hirst, Matt Oliver
Defenders: Bailey Webster, Curtis Robinson, Johnny Konings, Jordan Shaw, Sam Redwood, Tom Davis
Midfielders: Cory Mitchell, Dylan Windust, Jack Salter, Mark Jones, Rossi Nkoy, Xavier Pratt
Forwards: Ethan Galbraith, Godwin Darkwa, Judd Baker, Marc Evans

Has anyone got an up date on how Wanderers are doing.  The club's website is pretty poor.

Also does anyone know if the badge might be updated and made a little bit more professional, it's virtually unchanged from the one worn by players I played against in the late 80s/ early 90s at youth level.

You don't recognise any of the Wanderers players (bar Mitchell) - Oliver, Webster, Robinson, Konings, Shaw, Redwood, Jones?

From that lot, a strongest XI probably looks something like Hirst; Webster, Konings, Davis, Shaw; Windusst, Pratt; Jones, Salter, Nkoy; Baker

Hi Marto

The final squad will be announced in a few weeks through the correct channels. We have signed 19 players so far with the final 4 spots being confirmed over the next few weeks.

We have a preseason game against Hawkes Bay tomorrow . We also have an inter squad game next weekend followed by a game against East Subs in Hamilton on the 15th

We are working on our website but we are having a few technical issues with the domain rights. You can find up to date news on our Blue Army Facebook page

The club badge symbolises what this club is built on . We are proud of our history and what we stand for . We have no plans to change it

Regards

Brendon Coker - Club Chairman

The final preseason match for Eastern Suburbs and Hamilton Wanderers was played this afternoon at Ngaruawhahia's Centennial Park, where both teams gave most of their respective squads a run at some point through the match. Wanderers had by far the best of the first half and deserved to lead by 2 or 3 goals  at half time, however some average finishing saw them take only a 1-0 lead into the second half.

Suburbs played better in the second half and got the score back to 1-1 however a well taken goal by Marc Evans put Wanderers ahead once more with about 25 minutes to play. It was fairly even for the rest of the match and there was no further scoring.

I don't know how much can be read into preseason matches but I am picking both of these two teams  will have a reasonable chance of finishing in or around the play off places

Well done on the 4-0 win against a squad with AWs (some suspect) in it.

Given our keeper was sent off, what's his understudy like?

Damian is injured (but it is an injury he's played through at times at the end of the winter for Birko)

If he isn't fit to return this weekend, Max Tommy the likely custodian.

Hamilton peeps!

Any suggestions for charities or clubs to donate some memberships too, where the people would be likely to go up for the game?

Also Matt is arranging for some one off Welly tickets to be donated to good causes too.

If you're a bit better off than most drop a couple of $$ in here: https://givealittle.co.nz/cause/phoenixnorthernmem...

Cheers!
