There was a brilliant one hour documentary on Wynton's Bremen side winning the German league and cup double on beIn Sport Sky Sport 7 about a month ago.

Titled "My Season: The Werder Double"

It consists mostly of interviews with four members of the side (and Rufer is one of the most prominent) plus footage from games across the season.

Interesting that Rufer is described affectionately as a maverick , a bit different, a bit of a joker in the team, a little crazy.

It's a great story of a coach, Rehhagel, with unique coaching methods, strong on the psychological approach.

He signed players based on character as much as ability and Rehhagel's wife, who was very astute, had a big say on who was signed.

I can't find the documentary online but here is a comprehensive German language one about Bremen's title win:

Wynton's first goal of the season is just 3 minutes in:

It's good to be reminded how good he was.

BNU Pints, Wellington United Tuatara's and a couple of other Wellington Masters teams got that reminder this season!

I got a little gift from Wynton and the Kingz for my 21st when the boys played in Hamilton. They were staying in a hotel that my brother in law worked at, I turned up to pick him up after his shift and there was Wynton, Ngata (my fav. AW), Bunce and a few others present to wish me a happy 21st. Great memory.

Here's a good pub quiz question guaranteed to embarrass or annoy English people or Europeans: "Which country has provided a top goal-scorer in the UEFA Champions League era - England, France, Germany or New Zealand?" Answer: "New Zealand" (Wynton joint top-scorer 1993-94 season with Ronald Koeman, ten goals each) No Englishman, Frenchman or German has been top goal-scorer since the Champions League was instituted in the 1992-93 season. The last Englishman in the old European Cup was Terry McDermott with Liverpool in 1980-81.

He was so obsessed with the game he used to try and juggle a football “without letting it drop’’ all the way from home in Miramar to Rongotai Airport on the other side of Wellington Airport. He had to rest it on the nape of his neck when he crossed the road and “through the tunnel under the airport because the lights were often broken and it was too dark to see”.

It took him three months to achieve his goal of not allowing the ball to touch the ground.
