Experienced quartet headline U-23 squad for Olympic qualifiers Four players with either Olympic experience, a senior All Whites cap or both have been included in Neil Emblens 20-man New Zealand U-23 squad aiming to secure an Olympics berth via the Oceania qualifiers beginning in Taupo on Friday.

March 12, 2012

AUCKLAND Four players with either Olympic experience, a senior All Whites cap or both have been included in Neil Emblens 20-man New Zealand U-23 squad aiming to secure an Olympics berth via the Oceania qualifiers beginning in Taupo on Friday.

Current All Whites Jake Gleeson and Marco Rojas, who have been released by Portland Timbers and Melbourne Victory respectively for the March 16-25 event, are the biggest coups for Emblens squad with Rojas joining after his sides home match against Wellington Phoenix on Friday night, missing New Zealands opener against Papua New Guinea the same day.

Emblen has also been able to include two players who competed in New Zealands Olympic campaign four years ago as teenagers.

Wales based professional Greg Draper has scored 20 goals this season for The New Saints and made two appearances for the Oly Whites off the bench in China before receiving his sole All Whites cap later that year.

Auckland City fullback Ian Hogg has just returned from a trial in Europe and while he is yet to be capped at senior level he still adds valuable experience as one of only three members of the 2008 squad the others were Simon Elliott and goalkeeper Jacob Spoonley to play every minute of New Zealands Olympic debut.

Its a great boost to have all four of these guys available as it looked as those we might not have any of them for the qualifiers, said Emblen.

With their experience of professional football, Olympic Games or senior international football we expect them to be leaders on and off the field in what will be a testing tournament.

While the likes of Chris Wood, Tommy Smith, Kosta Barbarouses could be added to the mix if New Zealand qualify for the Olympics, Neil Emblen said the core of local players were just as important and backed them to get the first part of the job done.

"They really have double the motivation. Not only are the boys trying to get the country to the Olympics, they are playing for places knowing players are likely to be coming in if the team in successful in getting to the games."

Wellington Phoenixs Cameron Lindsay, 19, is the fourth professional named in the side while the majority of the squad are supplied by ASB Premiership sides including five players from Team Wellington, three from Auckland City, two each from Waitakere United and Waikato FC and one from Otago United.

New Zealand face Papua New Guinea and Tonga in Group B, with the winner of the group meeting the top side from Group A featuring Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, Fiji and American Samoa in the final on March 24 for Oceanias sole berth.

The mens Olympic football tournament is a 16 team event with teams able to add three over-age players to an otherwise under 23 squad.

Meanwhile, the Football Ferns are two just games away from qualifying for the womens football tournament in London and will meet Papua New Guinea home and away on March 31 and April 4 for Oceanias spot in the 12 team event.

Am i the only person who just doesnt rate Ethan Galbraith at all. I mean hes a half decent player, but there are far better strikers than him. Andy Bevin for example.

I guess O'Keefe must have become available.. being based overseas and all.

Greg Draper is an interesting choice. Forgot he was still young enough. He'll go pretty good up front with Dakota Lucas.

Very surprised by the lack of Luke Rowe.

I know it is under 23s, but are we not allowed 3 overage players in the qualifiers? Just at the olympics itself?

Also, is Luke Rowe not in favour with the fans as well? not up to speed on his story? i.e. is he actually pretty average, or other reasons aka. Chris James.

No, he's actually been really good for Team Wellington, and people are very surprised he wasn't selected for this squad.

Really interesting selections...

Luke Rowe clearly has more experience than the majorty of players selected, but would he get in ahead of Hogg, probaly not. And with Smith able to play LB, he may be third choice, and we probaly don't need a third choice LB.

Basalaj, perhaps they want to see Gleeson in action more than Basalaj, so thought it best to leave him out and playing in the ASB prem. (Same with Rowe possibly - need to see where Hogg is at having been at trial)

Good to see Draper there, playing in lower leage football, he should physically do fine in the comp. Will be good to have somone pacey running of him.

Can Fenton play wide right... we need another wide midfielder.

I can not understand why Feneridas got picked... never seen him do anything.

Why we worried about Luke Rowe? Where would he play? i dont think he would get a game in this side. Hogg one of the first names on the team sheet and Prattley can cover left back.

Gleeson is the countries best keeper so no problems there!

Its laughable that Galbraith made it, poor poor player. Bevin much better quality, he will be the the most hard done by these selections.

Remember seeing him play once for a NZ age selection (can't remember where though), and didn't rate him based on that game. Think he used to play somewhere in Belgium, not sure at what level, but it appears that's fallen through for him now.

gleeson is currently number 3 in the pecking order (although, i believe that he could soon be number one if moss and paston keep screwing up for the AW's) so he is a logical choice. logically, basalaj's recent selection on the bench for the AW's in the absence of gleesona nd moss, makes him number 4. so strange to see him left out.

in saying that, i hear that o'keefe is the goods

luke rowe, from AW stand by to U23 cast off.

it's all very well saying that hogg is better, and emblen obviously agrees, but hogg wasn't recently on stand by for the full AW squad, so this is odd.

Hogg has done well at big tournaments, probably our best at last olympics even as an 18yr old outside of Ryan Nelson. Also probably Citys best at both world club champs. Think Emblem sees this as an insurance decision. Possibly politics stoping him being in all whites. Politics may be stoping players getting into u23's aswell. Best players dont always get picked in this country unfortunatly. Not saying rowe shouldnt be their but their are other options.

Havent seen much of Saric but i guess we got to believe in the coaches selections.

Great to see Rojas kitting up, massive boost for the side if his attitude is right.

Has Galbraith been picked to play a similar role to what we expect to see Wood play... get the team use to that style perhaps?

Who picked the team Emblem / Ricki or both?

Also, are we trying to recruit players like Mitch Cooper to play or bring back someone like Michael Built for the games.... I just dont like our midfield.

Also, how old is Cory Chettleburgh, he's young enough, where's his name?

agree, if the team is to do well, this midfield had better do a good grafting job because there's not a lot to enthuse over there. in saying that, i have no idea about saric, so hopefully he's of zidane quality

I'm more interested to see how many overseas players will come into the frame once we qualify.

Ian Hogg > Luke Rowe. However, I'd probably rather Rowe over Tristan Prattley.

Those saying Luke Rowe was a AW fringe player is a bit of a stretch, Herbert only named him there when he was at Birmingham and hadn't seen him play.

Im not saying Prattley is better than Rowe however i believe Rowe would be 4th cab of the rank though if we go by the coaches prior selections...Hogg > Prattley > Milne > Rowe.

I think Hicks should start, he has looked good when ive seen him this season. Likes to get on the ball and has a nice left foot. We could have a great left side.

PNG with Frank Farina will be well organised so hope we get our selections spot on.

yeah, that seems to be the case, and who know's he may not even be considered the number 4 u23 left back because he wasn't even named in the provisional squad...

agree in terms of selections, png will be tough

on that note, the squad looks a wee bit like it will deploy emblen's 4-3-3 which he uses at waitak, if so will be interesting to see whether rockass plays wide or slots into the midfield three as a playmaker

The Rowe thing drives me mental. Having seen all four play he is at worst the 2nd best left back in that list. Maybe he needs to play in Auckland so NZ Football actually see him play.
