You are talking about Isaac Fitzgerald who has talent to burn for sure. For one reason and another (e.g., he had cancer as a 16 yr old) he has never really pushed on since he made the NZ u-17 squad as an u-16 playetr; I hope he works hard in Japan he is a fantastic potential and a really great lad. My son used to swim with him - and he was a champion swimmer too.Toffeeman662011-07-05 13:32:19

Looking forward with some interest to see which of the overseas-based players mentioned on this thread along with NZ-based players make the NZ U-20 squad to be announced this week (Friday?) To me would seem to be potentially our stongest-ever line-up at this level with players of the quality of Chris Wood, Marcos Rojas, Luis Esteves, Cameron Lindsay, Luke Rowe and Kosta Barbarouses.        l

Does anyone have the ages of these players? Interested to see who the younger ones are. Chris Wood should be there come the World Cup. Andrew Milne was overseas prior to arriving back at Auckland City and they've backed the local boys over Cameron Lindsay. Great to see Nelson boy Jamie Doris in the squad.Luis Garcia2011-03-30 12:30:15

I've seen Rufer play a bit over the summer and I remain to be convinced.

I guess Lindsay is probably considered to be getting better quality football at Blackburn and is more likely to make the final squad.

I agree about Caleb Rufer having seen him quite a bit over summer. Ryan Cain and Dakota Lucas are better choices IMO. Big Ethan Galbraith is there as a target man also, good on him and grats to Lower Hutt and St Peter's College on that.

It's the midfield that excites me most about this side. All sorts of skill, pace and trickery in there. As for the defence, they are a little slow, small and soft for my liking; some of the Pacific Island strikers could knock these lads around a bit. I think a beast like Galbraith is needed. Having said that I'm not sure I know of any better good, big, strong defenders in the age-group.Toffeeman662011-03-30 13:41:03

Jamie Doris is 18.

Did anyone ever read this? Players of the future from the NZ Herald written in 2010. Quite a few have made this squad.

Why does this story mention Marco Rojas and Cameron Lindsay as the two top players in the squad when the latter is just on standby?

I'm just guessing but he may be on stand by because his availability is uncertain. I don't know anything about him but the reporter must rate him highly.

Why do you say enigma? Stefan came through Eastern Suburbs as their number one age-grade keeper and was selected as a Fed2 goalkeeper for 12-15th Grades as far as I can recall. He was a bit podgy and slow as a kid, but always brave a good shot stopper. I think you could probably pick he was going to be pretty tall one day and that he would get more agile with work. I think he then hooked up with Rufer who got him overseas.

Very surprised on Michael Built, he's a paid professional playing (or atleast making the bench) for a League 2 side in the UK.

I'm hoping that they want him to stay with the club and hopefully get some game time in the near future for this club and look to bring him in for the actual WC in July assuming we make it.

Looks a decent squad though.

Is this all in Auckland? - The Solomon Island squad I've seen is pretty much just made up for island-based players. We will thrash everyone with this squad. If we don't, then there is something wrong.

Michael is a nice player. He played for the Northampton Reserves vs QPR reserves on March 15; hasn't played for the first team yet. Northampton are 4th from bottom in league 2 BTW.

I think it would have been a big call to pick him in midfield ahead of the likes of Rojas, Chettleburgh, Murphy, Doris and De Vries. Ahead of Sole and Thomas maybe, but it's a long way to bring him to sit on the bench for NZ.

I wonder why current champions Tahiti is not defending there title (As such). I think its pathedic that they are not sending a team over to NZ. Its not like they dont have funding for it.

Was really looking forward to a rematch with them.
