Champions - cruisy 3-0 scoreline in an eventful final against Fiji. Strong this tournament from our boys.
 And that makes 0 goals conceded for the tournament

Colloty got a 1st half brace and Herdman grabbed one towards the end. Even if it was looking quite likely to begin with, our U20s going all the way to qualify for another World Cup is a bright light on an otherwise disappointing day for NZ football fans.

Good little yarn. Be cool if NZF could organise a friendly against Norway some time next few years

https://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/football/world-game/130795310/when-manchester-city-star-erling-haaland-was-kept-quiet-by-new-zealand?cx_testId=12&cx_testVariant=cx_1&cx_artPos=5#cxrecs_s

Pijnaker told SunLive in 2021 that the players “joke about it sometimes, since he’s scoring so many goals … but he wasn’t able to score against New Zealand”.

Despite losing to Uruguay – and another recent Premier League newcomer, Liverpool striker Darwin Núñez – in their final match, New Zealand advanced to the round of 16, where they went down to Colombia in a penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw.

In Norway’s next match, Haaland scored nine goals in 12-0 rout of Honduras, enough to earn him the tournament’s golden boot, but not enough to send Norway through to the knockout stages. His captain that day, Leo Ostigard, later told The Athletic: “The journey started in that game”.

Out of the blue this is. But good to get some international exposure for our future AW's. Good job to cobble together a decent looking squad there too.

Words that you don't hear very often around here, but well done NZF 👏

Guatemala won the match last night 3-1. Highlights here. Colloty with the goal in the 8th minute. Guatemala's goals in the 54th, 60th and 80th.

Lineup was:
Foord;
O'Leary, Raj, Jarvie, Supyk:
Engle, Galletly, Middleton;
Donkers, Colloty, Pierce.

Only Herdman, Obel Hall and Cobb were on the bench.

Fiji lost 0-4 to Indonesia as well.

Hard to pass judgement given the short notice, but in May Guatemala - all three in this warm-up tournament, really - would have to be a game you'd expect to win.

Whenever we can get these lads together and get some game time under their belts is good for us. At this stage the result isn't important, and like you say, come May I'd be expecting us to beat all three sides at this tournament.

Excellent opportunity for the lads to acclimatize themselves to the conditions, and I suspect that a big reason for accepting the invitation in the first place was to allow someone from NZF the chance to look into facilities, as well as cobble a few notes together on sides we might end up facing at some stage.

Guatemala's 1st goal was great and a nice finish from Colloty for our goal. Could've done better marking the goal scorer for Guatemala's 2nd goal. Let's see how we do against Indonesia.

Also are these matches being streamed anywhere?

They probably didn't even have a training session prior the game, and only had Only 3 guys on the bench. 9 guys still in NZ. Yes lets reserve judgement.

Guatamela knocked out Canada U20 (the team Jay Herdman couldn't make) and then Mexico U20 in CONCACAF qualifing tourney. Both games they won on pens.

So a bit dismissive to just say we should be beating them. Though that CONCACAF tourney last year was in Guatamela. But age group football always tough to pick who the better teams are.

It is somewhat dismissive, but the reality is CONCACAF is probably the closest (least far away perhaps) confederation to OFC in quality - and the drop off after USA/Mexico is traditionally significant. Guatemala did beat Mexico to qualify, but on the back of significant luck - a penalty shootout after 120 minutes in which Mexico outshot them 29 to 8 with an xG figure of 3.57 to 0.44. Dominican Republic, who beat Guatemala in the semifinal, lost the final 0-6 to the US.

Looking at NZ's record at men's youth WC (17s and 20s), NZ teams have a points-per-game record of 1.10 against CONCACAF sides - only against AFC is it higher with 1.14 ppg. If you exclude the matches against USA/Mexico, then the record is 2.00 ppg with no defeats; against those two sides NZ has played six, drawing once 0-0 and losing the other five, scoring twice and conceding 19 in the process. Against Honduras, Canada, Costa Rica etc NZ teams have won/drawn 100% of matches, against every other team the win/draw rate is at 32% (and it drops to 28% if you exclude AFC teams as well).

Realistically, excluding Fiji who we can't draw, Indonesia, DomRep and Guatemala are likely to be the weakest teams at the World Cup. AFC might throw a contender or two when their qualifying happens in March though.

Friends of Football has the lineup as:
Gray;
Jarvie, Hughes, Kelly-Heald, Supyk;
McKay, Ettema, Conchie;
Herdman, Donkers, Obel Hall.

Best quality highlights I could find are here. Pinch of salt to be taken as I assume they're uploaded by an Indonesian so could embellish their performance.

It does make it look like NZ held on quite a bit though, especially in the first half and that Indonesia were unlucky not to win with the chances they had. Indonesia smashed one off the bar in the first half and had a few one-on-ones they failed to convert.

Colloty's goal came from their 'keeper spilling a straightforward, low cross into Colloty's shins, and Herdman's from Colloty breaking the offside trap before squaring for Herdman to finish into the open goal. Indonesia's goal came from a free header after a corner was whipped into the six-yard box.

Isaac Hughes was also sent off in the 88th, don't know what for, but he didn't look happy and the highlights show him throwing his shirt onto the ground in disgust.

Here is a stat sheet I saw on Twitter, don’t know if it’s 100% accurate, but probably close enough.

As for Fiji, they led for 57 minutes before losing to Guatemala. It's perhaps not surprising they were better than their previous match, as they had three players sent off against Indonesia, including one for attacking an Indonesian player. The Fiji FA even apologised to Indonesia and sent the player back to Fiji immediately.

Good result for the lads. Keep building, great challenge for the youngsters in what I'm assuming was 90% + humidity and almost 30°C temperatures.

As a side note, good to see Colloty bounce back from the disappointment of not picking up a contract in the UK. Would love to see the Nix take a chance on him for next season. The lad just knows how to score goals. Will be keeping a close eye on him when the Northern League kicks off.

I'd let them off here. The tourney invite came in very late, and they've no doubt been extremely busy organising it all at the last minute. The Cyclone making it even more difficult getting a squad to Indonesia. Plus most/all of their media staff will be in camp with the Ferns.
They did put out this Tweet. I'd cut them some slack for sure

3rd & final game against Fiji is later today.
World Cup draw to be made 1st April. AFC & CAF qualifying still to be completed. Both each get 4 slots. WC kicks off 20th May.
Be great if the NZ U20s were based in Bali (looks like hosts a pool)

CONEMBOL qualifying has been competed since the below article was written. Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador & Uruguay will be in Indonesia.

Interesting that the Dominican Republic and Israel will make their debuts in the competition.

https://en.antaranews.com/news/271206/u-20-fifa-world-cup-draw-on-apr-1-minister

Indonesian Youth and Sports Minister Zainudin Amali has informed that the draw for the group stage of the 2023 U-20 FIFA World Cup will be held on April 1, 2023.

The countries are Indonesia, which has automatically advanced as the host, Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Honduras, the United States, Fiji, New Zealand, England, France, Israel, Italy, and Slovakia.

A total of 24 countries will take part in the Cup from
May 20 to June 11, 2023. They will be divided into six groups.

The minister said that the matches of the 2023 U-20 FIFA World Cup will take place in
six stadiums, namely Gelora Bung Karno Stadium (Jakarta), Si Jalak Harupat Stadium (Bandung, West Java Province), and Manahan Stadium (Solo, Central Java Province).

The venues also include Gelora Bung Tomo Stadium (Surabaya, East Java Province), Gelora Sriwijaya Jakabaring Stadium (Palembang, South Sumatra Province), and
Kapten I Wayan Dipta Stadium (Gianyar, Bali Province).

AFC U-20 Cup, kicks off in Uzbekistan 1st March, to find their 4 WC qualifying teams (in addition to hosts Indonesia). After that some games against Australia U20, for Bazeley's team you'd think would be a strong possibility, as prep for May's WC.

Wikipedia (so grain of salt but still decent enough) has fleshed out most of the seeding groups for the draw on the 31st of March. It's probably not 100% accurate and also subject to change when the final two teams qualify overnight (South Korea/China and Japan/Jordan), but might give some insight as to what a group might look like.

New Zealand are currently in Pot 2 alongside England, Brazil, Ecuador, Colombia and the highest ranked winner in AFC (probably South Korea). It's ranked by performances in the U20 World Cup and always being there means you get better rankings. Teams also can't be drawn against someone from the same confederation.

Pot 1 best team to draw would obviously be Indonesia. If they got Indonesia the best draw from Pot 3 would probably be Honduras and from Pot 4 would probably be Slovakia (Israel made the UEFA U19 final after beating France and only just lost to England).

Another good draw would be Italy (Pot 1), Iraq/Jordan (Pot 3) and Guatemala/Dominican Republic (Pot 4).

To look at worst possible, it would probably be Uruguay from Pot 1, Nigeria from Pot 3 and Israel from Pot 4.

Another bad draw, possibly just as bad actually, would be France (Pot 1), Japan (possibly Pot 3) and Gambia (Pot 4).

I think the translation is pretty self explanatory. But not good news at all so close to the actual competition itself. Apparent punishment from FIFA sounds very possible as a result.

A lot of Aussies thinking they'll nab the competition altogether and host/compete...

Sorry lads, but they'll just move it to Qatar.

Would be bloody tough to pull that off during League/Union/AFL seasons. Not sure what ground regulations are for an U20 World Cup, but would say all the training facilities would be right up there.

Still reckon it'll be hosted up in Asia/Middle-East. But jeez, what news to wake up to!

What a bunch of idiots... chance to host a big football tourney and done 90% of the prep and it all falls over because they can't handle hosting a team from a country they don't like. What a farce!
