I saw the Trans Tasman cup and the gap with Aus looked huge, but again Futsal is something of a novelty here in NZ.
I personally love the sport and played quite high up back home in Italy as a youth, so I can't recommend it highly enough to young kids who want to sharpen their skills.

AUCKLAND – The difference between AFC and OFC was last night demonstrated as the Futsal Whites were knocked for seven by Asian representative’s Malaysia in their second group game of the OFC Futsal Invitational Championship.
The 7-1 defeat means that the Futsal Whites must win their final group game on Thursday against New Caledonia to proceed to the semi finals.
“AFC is a standard above OFC and it showed tonight,” said Futsal Whites coach Scott Gilligan.

AUCKLAND – The Futsal Whites suffered a heartbreaking semi final 2-0 loss to Australia at the OFC Futsal Championship Invitational at The Trusts Arena, Auckland last night.
It was the fourth time the Futsal Whites and Australia had met in the past week with Australia clear favourites having completed a 3-0 sweep at the Trans Tasman Cup in Wellington the previous weekend.
Futsal Whites coach Scott Gilligan changed his tactics from the Trans Tasman cup, defending deeper, waiting for Australia to make a mistake and looking to capitalise on quick turnovers.
The plan was working to perfection, frustrating Australia and limiting them to few half chances and long range efforts.
Heartbreak came just nine seconds before the end of the first half. Good footwork from Daniel Fogarty allowed him space to play the ball in to Chris Zeballos who finished expertly with a back heel.
Both Daniel Burns and Kareem Osman had great chances to level the scores in the second half but with the goal advantage Australia kept the ball and limited the Futsal Whites to sporadic attacks.
The Futsal Whites dreams of the final were ended when Zeballos grabbed his second with just 46 seconds left on the clock....

AUCKLAND – The Futsal Whites defeated Tahiti 1-0 in the 3rd place play off at the OFC Futsal Championship Invitational to become kings of Oceania.
With Asian invitational sides Australia and Malaysia competing in the final it was the 3rd place play off game between New Zealand and Tahiti that would decide the Oceania champions......
.....With both teams showing resilience in defence throughout the tournament the game always looked to be a tight affair, with a set piece or mistake proving the difference. And so it proved to be as New Zealand were given a free kick in dangerous area in just the 5th minute. Marvin Eakins pulled the ball back to Daniel Burns, who calmly slotted the ball into the corner through a crowded defence.....
.....In the final Australia marked their return to Oceania with a thrilling 5-1 victory against Malaysia.
Dylan Manickum won the Golden Boot with nine goals, five of which came in his first match against Solomon Islands and the team also secured The Fair Play award.
I watched these games online via Oceania You Tube channel. Yes, Aussie and Malaysia deserved to be in the final. The Solomons had done very little preparation leading in. The Kiwis had massive focus on building a defensive platform - which served them well, but lacked much of an attacking plan. We certainly didn't hold the ball for particularly long periods or make especially incisive passes regularly. However we can build a team around the skillful Manickum, and Daniel Burns who got through a power of work. Quite a few in the A squad are nearing the end of their careers at this level though. We need to bring a younger generation through to go to the next level of futsal. That will take some time. The big prize of course of being the top Oceania team is that we go to the Confederations Cup (November, Thailand). We will get thrashed but if we take the right squad we will learn from it for the future.
Futsal Whites currently in New Caledonia competing at the OFC Futsal Invitational. Teams competing are New Caledonia, New Zealand, Tahiti, Vanuatu and AFC invitational team, Malaysia. The 2015 edition will consist of OFC-only sides, with the winner going on to represent OFC at the 2016 FIFA Futsal World Cup in Colombia.

Malaysia challenge in front of Futsal WhitesFutsal Whites coach Scott Gilligan is expecting another tight tussle on Tuesday as his side go up against guest nation Malaysia at the Oceania Futsal Championship Invitational in New Caledonia.

Gilligan has been in charge since February 2012 and the results of his hard work with a number of these players is starting to show.
“We’re expecting a very tough game, as it was last year,” Gilligan said of the opening encounter.
“We know that all the Asian teams are a lot better than the Oceania teams at the moment but I think the four countries that are here from Oceania will certainly put their best foot forward and try and give Malaysia a good game.
“We’re the first game off the rank and hopefully we can prove to not just Malaysia, but the rest of Oceania that we do have the team to compete.
Gilligan’s Futsal Whites consists of the vast majority of the side that beat Tahiti 1-0 to claim a podium finish in 2013, Gilligan is confident he has a strong core that can continue improving to challenge for Oceania’s FIFA Futsal World Cup berth next year.
“Obviously the first two years I was in charge we chopped and changed quite a lot as we were looking for the right players. It’s only a year now until the next tournament, and that’s the World Cup qualifiers, so pretty much from this year we selected a core of 24 players and they’re the 24 who will work through to the final 12 next year.”
Captain Marvin Eakins will be key to controlling the pace of the game on the pitch, while the inclusion of the skilful Lucas Cordeiro Osorio Da Silva will surely bring some added flair alongside 2013 Golden Boot winner Dylan Manickum.

Malaysia must be double crap as the FWs win 4-1.

New Zealand were overwhelmed 7-1 in their 2013 encounter with the Asian Football Federation side, but that appeared a distant memory as the Futsal Whites showed why they deserved to be just the second Oceania team to beat an AFC opponent, after Solomon Islands victory over Thailand in a 2012 FIFA Futsal World Cup warm-up match.
“It’s fantastic, a tribute to the players,” Futsal Whites coach Scott Gilligan says of his side’s impressive opening victory.
“As I’ve said, our preparation hasn’t been the greatest but we’ve come off a three match series against Australia where we really got hammered and I think they took stock and thought about what they’re playing futsal for.
“They played a simple game today. We decided to defend a lot more compact. We still struggled a little bit to create, I’ll be honest, we still need to work on that but you can’t fault the guys, a 7-1 loss last time to Malaysia to a 4-1 is leaps and bounds ahead.”
Malaysia looked a shadow of their former selves - lacking the pace and excitement fans came to associate with them.
While they started strong with some early shots, they soon started to fade as the New Zealanders perseverance paid off.
Seven minutes in the opportunity fell to one of the Futsal Whites youngest recruits Jan Fischer who didn’t falter as he tucked the ball into the back of the net.
To their credit, Malaysia countered strong and less than five minutes later a stunning and powerful strike from Shamsul Zamri found its way past Futsal Whites ‘keeper Atta Elayyan for the equaliser.
However, it wasn’t the visitors’ night and New Zealand once again had the advantage after a lurking Dylan Manickum tipped in Hicham Kamri’s delivery at the back post.
After the break Malaysia seemed reinvigorated and upped the pressure on the leaders as they looked to equalise a second time. But their offensive pressure left them weak at the back and with eight minutes remaining Kareem Osman added a third for the Futsal Whites when he capitalised on a ‘keeper error.
Fischer earned his brace after tapping a lay-off from Kamri in behind the goalkeeper. Down 4-1 Malaysia changed tactics, adopting the flying ‘keeper with Shamsul Zamri honoured with that role.
While an effective offensive move, it does leave the defence exposed and New Zealand certainly tried to take advantage of that factor. With the clock ticking down Malaysia simply ran out of options as New Zealand tightened ranks to secure a memorable victory.

After Tuesday’s opening 4-1 win over guests Malaysia, patience paid off for the Futsal Whites according to coach Scott Gilligan, especially in the first half, as the side was content to let Vanuatu test the waters in their half.
“I think in the first half we were very patient. Very patient when we had the ball, but also our defensive structure was sound and we didn’t try to do anything fancy in the first half, but just tried to contain,” Gilligan said of his team’s approach.
“The second goal was a good counter attack which we converted at the back post and gave us a good 2-0 buffer. From there we sort of said we don’t need to chase the ball, it’s a matter of them coming to us. They certainly pressed a lot and gave away too many fouls – but we couldn’t convert them all either.”
Gilligan’s charges left it almost ten minutes before they pounced on an opportunity as Match Day 1 provider Hicham Kamri switched roles to score the opening goal.
The Futsal Whites’ second goal was courtesy of the effective partnership between Kamri and youngster Jan Fischer who was at the far post to tap in the cross with less than two minutes remaining in the first half.
Vanuatu got on the board six minutes into the second half when some great combination play up the court was finished at the post by Ricky Tuigaloa.
The celebrations weren’t long-lasting however as 30 seconds later a hand ball in their area saw the referee award a penalty for New Zealand. Captain Marvin Eakins stepped up to do the honours, smashing it past Vanuatu goalkeeper Ivano Philip.
With the foul count creeping past five for Vanuatu they found themselves in a spot of bother as they hit the maximum with 13 minutes remaining.
They were fortunate when Kareem Osman fired his effort over the target from the 10m mark, but when Vanuatu conceded again with eight minutes remaining Eakins showed a touch of class as he fired past Philip for his second.
The fifth and final goal for the Futsal Whites was a great reward for the hard work keeper Atta Elayyan put into denying Vanuatu as he booted into an empty net after Vanuatu adopted the flying keeper tactic.
With Eakins directing from the centre of the court, the New Zealand defense proved itself one of the toughest in Oceania to break down as they kept Vanuatu at arms-length and drawing the shots before blocking and transitioning rapidly.
“I think our defense has been key to our success so far, most definitely,” Gilligan continues.
“That’s one of the things we talked about after the Trans Tasman – we let too many goals in and we give away stupid balls. What we talked about for this tournament was eliminating the small errors that have been costing us games and I think it’s shown.
“We copped one tonight and again it was from an error, but at least we’re minimising those chances for the opposition.”

I watched most of it on Stuff and funnily enough the stream worked better on my iPhone than on my laptop.
We played all right, but that win is still elusive...
Was at the game. Australia still the better team but margin looks like it is getting closer. NZ had a couple of chances at nil all. Couple of sloppy goals conceded but all in all quite promising for tonight and Friday. Also a combined Wellington / Christchurch futsal team played against Malaysia in a friendly and drew 3-3.

New Zealand goalkeeper killed
A New Zealand sporting representative is among those killed in the Christchurch terror attack.
Stuff has learned Atta Elayyan, 33, the goalkeeper for the national and Canterbury men’s futsal teams, was shot by the gunman as he prayed at a mosque in the city on Friday.
Elayyan, who was born in Kuwait, recently became a father and was a popular member of the Christchurch tech industry. He was a director and shareholder of a company called LWA Solutions.
NZ Football declined to comment on Saturday night as they had not had confirmation from police about Elayyan’s death
