Grant Turner's header against Aussie. The best headed goal I've ever seen, or am ever likely to see.

Has to be the Turner header. Not only the quality of the header itself but the build up play and the context of the match - finishing off a 2-0 away win against Australia to effectively knock them out of the WC. Imagine the reaction today if we beat them in a competitive match, in Sydney

My pick as well. Tried looking for it on youtube but couldn't find it so I gave up.

ditto. Not just for the quality of the header, but the build up to it was pretty impressive.

Being almost behind Walker at the time, and seeing his reaction when it went in, coupled with there being a free player in the box (Sumner ??)  I still can't help but think it was an accident.

It wasn't the best goal - by far - but still our best, I reckon.

Skipper Sumner in Malaga, June '82. As a kid it was quite scary seeing those WC games, were we out of our depth? Would we embarrass ourselves? Would we cruelly undo all that drama to get there?

We were 3-0 down at HT v that very strong Scotland side. I think it was Peter Williams who said at the break, 'Well, it looks like the All Whites are getting a hard lesson here, in just how tough the WC Finals are going to be...'

Then we scored. I ran into the kitchen shouting, 'We've scored! We've scored!'

For me there was nothing like that feeling, before or since. Well, apart from Wooddin, Reid, Smeltz, Fallon Jnr (although I never saw that goal live)...and those epic 1980-1982 WC Qualifying goals, each one almost as important as the other.

No goals in this recent series v Peru was a real bummer. The archives will remain forever bare.

Just on Grant Turner, what cruel luck to twist his ankle whilst in Spain training for the finals. To miss the big show after doing so much in the lead-up is not right.

Richard Wilson is the hard luck story of that campaign. Still no idea what he did.

got too cocky and assumed he' be the number 1 and wanted to spend more time with his girlfriend than the team, Van Hattum wanted it more - this was the general jist of it from Sam Malcolmson's book

That sounds like something I want to read. After this most recent WC campaign I'm in the mood for some serious - and successful - looking back.

If someone was 12 years old in 2010 then I'd hope they have similar memories and, in 35 years time (from 2010), they'll look back on it the same way I do 1982.

Yeah I was 10 during the 82 world cup, these qualifiers rekindled my interest in past WC campaigns etc...

It was a tremendous (even life-changing - check my avatar and post-name) experience.

In saying that though, the 2010 campaign was special too, it was a real monkey-off-the-back for us in regard to the WC. We also got our first points, and rocked the Azzurri's world.

Yeah Milts, why not? I reckon it's a very good read, the only "'with hindsight" book on the 82 AWS there has ever been.

I'd agree with that, lot better than I thought it would be, but that was probably Malcolmson had someone writing it with him (can't mind teh name) - There is a copy in the Wellington Library if anyone is interested in it

Rufer left foot volley v Saudi (0-5) was a cracker actually. He sort of lets it drop over the shoulder.

Btw what an event that was, thinking we are gone then wondering how we didn't qualify direct.
