Probably got a better chance of getting a result out of the match considering the US picked a weakened/inexperienced line up. Hudson will hopefully keep an unchanged lineup. Maybe one or two switches at the most (please!).

Tactically will probably be a bit different, USA even with a less experienced side, would be more structured and perhaps a little more direct compared to a pretty fluid, fast movement off the ball type of football that Mexico employed. Technically they'll still be very good - Jurgen Klinsmann wouldn't have it any other way.

Will consider it a very good tour, even if we don't get a result, as long as we can back up today's performance and show that we can play some good football and stick to our game plan. So good to see a NZ team not playing hit and hope football against quality opposition, very refreshing.

I'm about to touch some wood, but wouldn't it be so 'New Zealand Football' of us to end up capitulating and losing 4-0 to the USA with a Phoenix player picking up an injury?

If a Phoenix player gets injured now I'm blaming you for jinxing it.

Sad for Gleeson that he's out injured but he's already super well-known to MLS coaches watching.

This will be a good shop window for Marinovic - maybe an MLS franchise will like what they see.

Caps of possible USA starting eleven (top four capped in each area):

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_men%27...

Goalkeepers:   2 caps (most-capped keeper named)

Defenders: 41   36   32   27

Midfield: 123  49  21  4

Forwards: 96  20  13  7

So, it's not really a weak USA side.

Many of their regulars have been named with some new faces and  a few with 2,3,4,7 or 9 caps.

There are two strikers from Bundesliga clubs named (the already highly-rated Julian Green of Bayern Munich - youngest American to ever score in the World Cup Finals, in 2014) and Terrance Boyd of Leipzig who has seven caps but has been out injured for the past two German seasons and previously was a star in the Austrian league with Rapid Vienna.

Plus the perennial Jozy Altidore with 96 caps and 37 goals (ex Villarreal, Hull, AZ Alkmaar and Sunderland). Scored 39 goals in two  seasons for AZ in the Dutch league and the winner in the Dutch Cup final vs. PSV. Youngest American to score a hat-trick in an international.

The defence includes 41 cap DeAndre Yedlin of Newcastle United (ex Spurs and Sunderland) who played in the 2014 World Cup finals.

Gonzalez, Besler and Orozco are all established national team regulars with 138 caps across the top four defenders.

the midfield has the perennial captain Michael Bradley plus 49 cap Sacha Kljestan and 21 cap Danny Williams of Reading in the Championship. Uncapped Lyndon Gooch of Sunderland has also been named.

Of the twenty players named, four play in Liga MX in Mexico, six in Europe, ten in MLS.

FYI - pretty sure that Marinovic and Julian Green have played against each other in German 4th tier

Green mostly plays for Bayern Munich's II side

I suspect he will also want to use this window as a chance to give a couple more of this squad some game time and not send back a couple of the key players to their clubs more tired than he can get away with. He will be juggling a number of pressures.

I think we are short of genuine goal scorers in this squad, another one or two would be nice, as well as a couple of midfielders I guess...

Another great game for NZ against what will be a fairly strong USA side, though still quite far from the A side/definite B side.

Klinnsmann sent 7 or so European-based players back to their clubs, willbe missing their better Bundesliga players like Fabian Johnson, John Brooks, Bobby Wood and Christian Pulisic.

Also no Geoff Cameron from Stoke.

Would expect all of them to start against Mexico if healthy in November.

Thirteen of the USA squad that beat Cuba in Havana 2-0 on Saturday NZT have been retained for the NZ game.

Scorers were veteran Wondolowski and young Bayern Munich reserve player Julian Green (Man of the Match award). Fans online say that Green was the outstanding US player:

http://www.ussoccer.com/stories/2016/10/07/20/10/1...

USA lineup in that game (names in bold will face the All Whites):

1-Ethan Horvath; 2-DeAndre Yedlin (21-Timmy Chandler, 46), 20-Geoff Cameron, 6-John Brooks (15-Steve Birnbaum, 46), 23-Fabian Johnson; 10-Christian Pulisic (18-Chris Wondolowski, 46), 4-Michael Bradley (capt.), 16-Sacha Kljestan (14-Danny Williams, 69), 19-Julian Green; 17-Jozy Altidore (9-Paul Arriola, 69), 7-Bobby Wood (8-Jordan Morris, 60)
Subs not used: 12-
David Bingham, 22-William Yarbrough; 3-Omar Gonzalez, 5-Perry Kitchen, 13-Lynden Gooch
Head Coach: Jurgen Klinsmann

Klinsmann is releasing the top European-based (especially Bundesliga) players to keep their clubs happy for matches only a few days later on the weekend, while retaining and adding more MLS and Mexico based players who will only have a short trip home to their clubs after the All Whites game, although British-based players Yedlin, Gooch, Williams and Kitchen are retained.

He also wants to create competition for places and has an open mind on selections for the November qualifiers:

http://www.ussoccer.com/stories/2016/10/08/15/59/1...

“These friendly games are about getting our group ready for Mexico and Costa Rica,” said Klinsmann. “For the guys coming in, it’s a chance to prove their point. We sent some of our European-based guys back to make sure they stay in a rhythm for the next few weeks, and with Jordan Morris and Chris Wondolowski they have a chance to extend their seasons. When it comes to roster spots for November, the fight is on.”

Following the 2-0 win against Cuba, Kellyn Acosta, Juan Agudelo, Matt Besler, Terrence Boyd, Bill Hamid, Michael Orozco and Tim Parker will join the team in the nation’s capital.

After recovering from multiple injuries during the past two years, the invitation to Terrence Boyd marks his first MNT camp since making the 30-man preliminary roster for the 2014 FIFA World Cup. Agudelo also returns for the first time since taking part in the MNT’s 2-1 away win against world champion Germany on June 10, 2015.

Additionally, nine players have been returned to their clubs, John Brooks, Geoff Cameron, Timmy Chandler, Ethan Horvath, Fabian Johnson, Jordan Morris, Christian Pulisic, Chris Wondolowski and Bobby Wood.

With the changes, the U.S. roster stands at 20 players for Tuesday’s match against New Zealand.

U.S. ROSTER BY POSITION:
GOALKEEPERS (3): David Bingham (San Jose Earthquakes), Bill Hamid (D.C. United), William Yarbrough (Club Leon)

DEFENDERS (6): Kellyn Acosta (FC Dallas), Matt Besler (Sporting KC), Steve Birnbaum (D.C. United), Omar Gonzalez (Pachuca), Michael Orozco (Club Tijuana), Tim Parker (Vancouver Whitecaps FC), DeAndre Yedlin (Newcastle)

MIDFIELDERS (6): Paul Arriola (Club Tijuana), Michael Bradley (Toronto FC), Lynden Gooch (Sunderland), Perry Kitchen (Hearts), Sacha Kljestan (New York Red Bulls), Danny Williams (Reading)

FORWARDS (4): Juan Agudelo (New England Revolution), Jozy Altidore (Toronto FC), Terrence Boyd (RB Leipzig), Julian Green (Bayern Munich)

Probably the country's seventh-best centre back (behind the other 4 in the squad, Tommy Smith, and Luke Adams, who it seemed was harshly done in this selection). Probably the weakest link in PNG in May/June.

Apparently a good organiser and reader of the game. Needs to look after the ball more and be a bit harder in the tackle.

Impressed at centre back at U-20 world cup. Hasn't really made the step into the AWs yet. Fought hard, but had a difficult Nations cup campaign. Good future prospect if builds on potential.

Good to see Nellie visit the AWs, if just briefly. Acknowledge he often didn't make himself available for NZ, but he will always be a legend in my book. A true leader of men, and I miss his eloquence when interviewed. Reid maybe judged a better player when he finishes up, but sorry charismatic he is not.

With Patterson, Colvey and Durante in - arguably a significantly worse team we're putting out. Thought Themi, Wynne and Kosta were pretty good.
